Lifestyle changes and PCOS

Dre. Karen Desrosiers

The first step when we discuss treatment, is always to bring back the subject of lifestyle. Lifestyle is the first thing that should be done before any other treatments. When we talk about diet, one of the common questions I have is which diet is the best? None of them are better than others. Basically, it’s a balanced diet that you need. We don’t recommend restrictive diet because patients cannot follow that long term, and it’s known that when they stop it, they gain more weight than they lost. Having a good balanced diet and doing exercise is also for your health. It’s really helpful for mental health, and it can help to control your glucose, and having more regular cycles, but it’s not just for the weight loss. Sometimes patients tell me that they do everything they do exercise regularly and do a good diet, but it’s still not losing weight. It’s possible. Many study now about obesity shows that it could have a dysregulation on the appetite and also in the metabolism that makes them not able to lose weight. It’s why for those patients sometimes we can discuss anti-obesity medication that can be used. They can help to lose weight to restore better metabolic functions and can bring back ovulation. But they’re not recommended if you’re trying to get pregnant.
